|Oratio ante colligationem|
Prayer Before Connecting to the Internet
The prayer below was composed by Fr. John T. Zuhlsdorf in Barcelona Spain at the Observation Service for Internet in 2002, where it was proposed that St. Isidore of Seville (560-636) be named as the Patron Saint of the Internet. The OSI felt that St. Isidore is a logical choice since he wrote Etymologies, which is a sort of dictionary and database. This prayer has gotten around the web quite a bit, unfortunately without any attribution in most cases. The author, Fr. John T. Zuhlsdorf, noticed it on my web site and was kind enough to let me know he had composed it back when St. Isidore was first proposed as the patron of the Internet.
Contrary to some press reports that have been circulating, nothing formal has been issued from the Vatican. Several other saints have been proposed by other groups as well.
|OMNIPOTENS aeterne Deus, qui nos secundum imaginem Tuam plasmasti, et omnia bona, vera, pulchra, praesertim in divina persona Unigeniti Filii Tui Domini nostri Iesu Christi, quaerere iussisti, praesta quaesumus ut, per intercessionem Sancti Isidori, Episcopi et Doctoris, in peregrinationibus per interrete factis et manus oculosque ad quae Tibi sunt placita intendamus et omnes quos convenimus cum caritate ac patientia accipiamus.||ALMIGHTY and eternal God, who hast created us in Thy image and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful, especially in the divine person of Thy only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, bishop and doctor, during our journeys through the internet, we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter.|
|Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.||Through Christ our Lord. Amen.|
